FYSICA 2011

FYSICA 2011 took place in Amsterdam in the 'Hoofdgebouw' of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam on Friday April 15th.

The 90th anniversary of the NNV was celebrated at FYSICA 2011.

Welcome to FYSICA 2011!
We promise an exciting day.

FYSICA 2011 offered a varied programme for all physicists in the Netherlands, whether student or professor, in schools, industry or academia. In the plenary programme, Misha Katsnelson (Radboud Universiteit) described his close cooperation with Nobel prize winners Geim and Novoselov in the study of the remarkable material graphene: “Graphene: CERN on your desk”. Fabiola Gianotti (CERN), leader of the ATLAS experiment, discussed first results of the Large Hadron Collider. Huib Bakker (AMOLF) showed that there is interesting physics to be found in water: “Ions in water: two is a crowd!”. Physica prize winner Detlef Lohse (Universiteit Twente) gave a supersonic lecture: “Supersonic air and water jets through flow focusing”. Furthermore, three young physicists tried to win the favour of the audience in the Young Speakers Contest.

In the afternoon, six focus sessions took place in parallel (see below for more information). After diner, the audience and the general public was invited to an evening with KNAW president Robbert Dijkgraaf: “Quantumcultuur: de moderne fysica en de kunsten”. The programme during the day was in English, the evening programme was in Dutch.
