The discovery and working principle of the CCD

Boyle and Smith who invented the Charge Couple Device (CCD) have been awarded part of the 2009 Nobel Prize of Physics. This discovery, using the photoelectric effect to capture image information on silicon instead of chemical film, led to the wide variety of digital image sensors we use today in consumer, industrial, and scientific applications from digital cameras to automated inspection to astronomy.

The talk will address this discovery, explain the working principle of a CCD, give examples of different application areas and discuss current research and development activities.
